My Challenge
I am about to celebrate a huge birthday. A while back I realized that this time next year, I will become a senior citizen!!! ..... 90% of the time I still feel like I am in my mid 40’s ..... reality has not sunk in ..... and I really do not want it to!
My challenge to myself is to try 65 things I have never done in the next 12 months, before I turn 65 ..... that should make this an interesting year! A ‘bucket list’ is a list of things you want to do before you die ..... this is different, in that I have no idea what I want these 65 things to be.
This is where you come in, can I ask you to introduce me to or suggest something new, something you think I might enjoy? ..... something Relatively safe and legal please!
To start, I took my grandson on a Tree Top Adventure; we balanced as we walked on a high wire, suspended by clips, navigated floating walkways high above the ground and finished off with a 351 foot zip line over water. Now that was exhilarating! We had a blast
..... I will not pretend it was easy, swaying back and forth up there in the air, but it was a super experience.
Soo ..... what do you think you could suggest?
The few people I have told about this personal challenge think I am nuts, but that is nothing new, they keep saying how 65 is a big number and it will be difficult to accomplish 65 new things.
I’m up for it ..... let’s see what you can come up with. It could be as simple as trying a new food, or ?????
For the last 9 days I have had laryngitis, negotiating 4 deals with no voice, that has been a challenge too, maybe I can count that as a new experience ..... let’s hope it heals up quickly and never happens again.
Make It A Great Year

What a great idea, Kathy! I love this challenge you have set for yourself! My suggestion: Give a speech or sing in public. Happy early birthday!
I've always wanted to ride a zip line. Congratulations that took courage, and Happy Birthday!
Hi Kathy,
Oh I LOVE THIS!
Your zip line video was great, I've done it a couple of times myself & would do it again in a heartbeat. I'm ahead of you a few years, but I love your style, and I too don't feel my age.
I guess you would have to decide what's important & would be a challenge for you in creating your list. I've had a life-list (aka buckt list, that I made prior to the movie) myself and crossed many of them off, yet got more to go.
So tell us what interests you? & btw, u look great!
Kathy, there are many things we do not do in our life time - and you have a total positive approach to donig something before you turn 65! I like your energy - wish everyone thinks positively all the time, like you...
I have one thought....my thoughts are....go hard or go home. You leave it all on the table or you live your life looking back with regrets! So what? You're into phase two. Make it the best ever!
You? 65? Not buying it! ;-] Try celebrating the 25th anniversary of your 40th birthday instead! If you go South of the border, we U S Rainers will find plenty of ways to entertain you over the next 12 months!
Kathy great idea. Good luck. I wish ........... I could have done that.
Call me boring... I have actually no interest in doing 65 new things... If something new comes along, I'm game to give it a try, but my to-do list never seems to get short enough to start any other list. Kathy, good luck with this!
Happy about to be 65 Birthday. You look great! Travel to New Zealand!! That's what I would do!
How do you decide when you’re a senior citizen? The American Association of Retired Persons has been sending me stuff for six years, since I turned 50. Their name is kind of a misnomer. As of last year I’m eligible for many senior citizen discounts, although another set of discounts come at the age of 60, and then again at 65. I’m so confused I think I’ll just stay young!
Kathy, 65 is the new 40, but if you are looking for something really interesting to do, how about doing a FIRE WALK!!! They are always exhilarating. Check out the WWW for a time and place.
Ride a Motorcycle at 100MPH+. If you don't want to drive it, then sit on the back and hold on tight.
Read the Entire New Testament out loud.
Get a Bit Part in a Shakespeare Play.
Obtain your Certification as a Scuba Diver.
Trace your family back to the earliest immigrants to the New World.
Study Dante's Comedy.
Go Deep Sea Fishing on a Charter Boat.
Dance at the Ritz Carlton when a Big Name Band is playing.
Eat the best Caviar that money can buy.
Take up Skeet Shooting.
Kill your Television.
Sing in one of those "Flash Mob Choirs" this Christmas.
Serve Food in a Homeless Camp.

Hi Kathy--I think this is great--your 65 things to do challenge in the next 6 months. I tried zip-lining last year and loved it. Okay, I suggest you go on a safari in South Africa. Something I never thought I would do and absolutely the best trip I have ever taken, and I have traveled extensively. Enjoy the next 12 months--sounds like a lot of fun.
Kathy, I had the perfect addition to your bucket list until I read your last paragraph... I was going to suggest negotiating 4 deals with laryngitis! Okay, but seriously, you should try paragliding. I did it in Switzerland on my honeymoon 9 years ago. Still one of the most amazing things I've ever done. It wasn't scary, but peaceful and beautiful- and I don't care for heights. It should be on everyone's bucket list! Speaking of heights, great job on your ropes challenge course. I just did that last month for the first time. It was challenging, but fun!
What a great idea. That would be a challenge to do the list!
Kathy -- How about visiting each of the provincial capitals; or a museum in each province.
Then there would be getting to the highest points in each province -- or taking a trip to a continent you havne't been to before.
Wow - can not believe I'm having a hard time thinking of something.
Agree with Fred (comment #12) about SCUBA diving if you've never done it.
If I were to put together the same list, one of my top items would be to spend a week at a culinary school.
Can't wait to check back to see what others came up with! And, I'm age 53 and feel like I just graduated college!
What a super idea. that sounds like o much fun. I am having challenges, though, thinking of good ideas. How about riding an elephant (or camel).
Kathy, you go girl..as they say age is in the mind and physically if you don't eat healthily! So try cooking a real vegetarian 4 course meal for friends that you all can enjoy & tastes great! It will keep you going for the other 64 items! Have you driven a motorcycle...try it!
Kathy,
Now you have me thinking about my bucket list. I have to move fast though since my 65th is in January.
Rich
You go girl! I just turned 63 and have to tell you that I look in the mirror and say WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? YOU SURE DON'T FEEL THAT OLD, WHERE DID THOSE WRINKLES COME FROM? I can TOTALLY relate!
Hi Kathy - First, congratulations on your feature. This post has given me the idea for several posts that I can write over time on a number of topics.
Since you enjoyed your Tree Top Adventure, I have a great idea. I am including several links since most of your readers will not be familiar with this great new Toronto attraction (and to promote the Greater Toronto Area that we both live in).
The CN Tower's EdgeWalk. The CN Tower is the World's Tallest Tower at 553.33 m (1,815 ft, 5 inches). It has been a very famous part of Toronto's skyline since 1976. On the Edgewalk, you walk on the outside of the CN Tower at a height of 1,168 ft (356 m) above ground.
Here is one great video (now on YouTube). There are a lot of news articles and videos from summer 2011 when the EdgeWalk attraction opened.
Kathy, Great Challenge! You need to go up in the RE/MAX Balloon of course! That should definitey be one of the 65 things to do before 65 if you have not already.
Kathy...
I guess that I am one of the lucky ones ... I have done pretty much all I have ever wanted to do. Now I'm ready for a rocking chair with a view!
Kathy, I would love to meet you in person! So that is my idea - meet 65 Active Rainers, in person. And I hope your laryngitis heals quickly - there is something so wrong about an agent who can't talk...but it will definitely have you upping your non-verbal skills!! LOL
Thanks everyone for your encouraging words ..... this year will be a lot of fun! I love the comments and ideas ..... keep them coming. When I can talk I will get back to you ..... my fingers have done so much talking this past week they now have laryngitis too!!!
Kathy,
Travel... as much and as often as you can... My first choic that not many know about is Croatia.... the Dalmation Coast.. its a fabulous place to go and has just amazing beaches, food, bed and breakfasts... and the people are so friendly and warm... just a fabulous place to travel... good luck on this
Kathy- what a great idea!!! And, I have to say.. good for you! How about diving for lobster in the Florida Keys... you don't even have to know how to dive. In some areas where it's shallow enough, you're towed by a boat and when you see a lobster hole you just take a breath, drop down, grab the lobster and guess what's for dinner! The key here is being able to hold your breath.
Kathy, the zip line would definitely be on my list. How about snorkeling and hang-gliding? This is a great idea!!
Hsppy Birthday Kathy,
In our area every New Year a group called the Polar Bears takes a plunge into the ocean as a celebration of life. My neice and nephew do it every year, personally I think it is crazy but it is something you might want to try. They say it is lots of fun
Wow, there are so many things but it depends on what you've already done. Have you tried to consider your list from the point of view of "I normally do this, but that is the opposite?".
There was a time when I would ask for a senior citizen discount only to be challenged. Now, I get it no problem...Hmmmm. Good post and good host...dear Kathy
What a great idea. I'll be 60 next year and you've inspired me to think of bucket list of my own.
Happy Birthday Kathy !! Glad to see you on the zip line. I am going to South A merica in a few months
and that is on my list.
Have you walked on the beach in Boca Raton,Florida at sunrise ??
It is breathtaking. Irene Durocher
Boca Raton,Fla. U.S.A.
Kathy,
If you have never done it:
1) drive around the Cabot Trail,
2) go to Drumheller,
3) drive the Icefield Parkway,
4) spend some time in the inner city in Quebec,
5) have a picnic at Toronto Island.
Brian
Eat 65 different types of cuisines?
Try towerrunning (races up stairs of tall skyscrapers.)
Learn bridge (I'm doing it now, could take another 65 years just to learn - on second thought, skip this one!)
Do a 3-day cancer walk (could count for 3 things . . .)
Plant 65 bulbs (hurry, time is getting short)
Visit a chocolate factory
Phew, this isn't as easy as it seems.
hope this note finds your voice healed Kathy - and have a blessed birthday year - volunteering at an charitable organization that you've never helped before is always a way to learn and grow beyond earthly years :)
sincerely,
grace
Kathy:
Happy birthday. I don't think I could do that high wire thing. Even at 30 I wouldn't have been able to do it. Good for you for preparing a bucket list. Hope you can get all things you want to done in a year. Good luck.
Climb a glacier
Ride an elephant
Eat Maryland crabs until you are so full you could pop.
Visit Ground Zero
Go to New Orleans for a Jazz Festival
Watch a sunset in Key West
WOW as I read through these I realize how many wonderful sights and sounds and places and things I have already enjoyed in life ..... I also realize how much my passions in life and for life have influenced me ..... made me who and what I am today.
Kathy- come to New York and see the Statue of Liberty, a Broadway show and Ellis Island. I'd add Rome, Paris and the Grand Canyon for starters also.
Happy birthday and many more!
For my 65th birthday, I hope to run naked down Main Street. Nah, I don't think I can do the running part. So maybe I'll just go skinny dipping. You could do that, too. Be daring and wild.
What a great idea ~ Hope you enjoy all the 65 days to the max. I think some travel would be great... or attending an event or play etc. or a concert of one of your favorite performers you have not had the chance to see... so many things.
Rose - I love giving speeches......this is an easy one for me...now singing, everyone would plug their ears! #1
Leolinda - The zip line was a blast....nothing to fear....just fun 351 feet in 19 seconds! #2

Russel - I'm staying young too, for as long as I can. #10
You're brave to try 65 new things in 1 year!
How about: Scuba diving or snorkeling; go to a luau; parasailing; riding a horse into Haleakala Crater; Halloween in Lahaina; body surfing on Maui; eating raw fish while watching the sunset. I made it easy for you, all you have to do is come to Maui and you can do them all while here!
What a great idea --- I am hitting the big 60 mark soon and may try 60 new things ---- sounds great!
I love this post Kathy, it's a challenge for your spirit...like finding the true you :) Happy Early birthday and age is not a factor :) Everyone should follow in your foot steps with this challange :) i think i just very may will...yes :)
Kathy,
Love this concept! I will be curious to see what the good community here at AR comes up with. Have to put some thought into this and get back to you on what I would contribute as a suggestion.
All the best for a wonderful lead up year!
